Polar Bears

Svalbard Archipelago, Norway

July 2001
.
This adult male bear objected to our interruption of his nap. Obviously, he was a well fed bear.
But this young male (about a year and a half old) hadn't been able to feed as well.
A favorite prey of Polar Bears is the Ringed Seal which has a high fat content and is widely available.
The bears typically eat only the fat leaving the remains to the gulls.
This bear has taken to land to snooze, to browse the vegetation and to hunt for Common Eiders and their chicks.
